Portugal

Little-explored European gem offers distinctive heritage and scenic highlights

Occupying the Iberian Peninsula with the much larger country of Spain, Portugal is a world unto itself, sitting in one of the most remote and least explored corners of Western Europe. In history, language, culture, and cuisine, Portugal, in spite of its diminutive size, is very much a nation with a distinctive and remarkable heritage and identity.

For such a small country, the regional diversity is immensely varied and of compelling interest, from the beach resorts of the Algarve and the Estoril Coast to the historic capital of Lisbon and onward into the north, embracing the city of Porto and the rural Minho, where old traditions still prevail, and even the most remote province, Trás-os-Montes, where country life goes on much as it has for decades. The fairy-tale town of Sintra and Baroque splendor of Braga are “must-sees” as are the 13th century splendor of Obidos and the 360 degree panoramas from the fortress of Marvão.

Colorful medieval villages and charming seaside towns are plentiful as are ancient castles and romantic palaces. Add in year-long sunshine, mountains, grand rivers and a vast coastline and you have one of the most unique and rewarding European destinations.
